Artificial Lawns

Artificial Grass Lawns

An artificial lawn stays green through dry summers and wet winters, with no mowing, feeding or bare patches. It suits families with dogs or young children, shaded gardens where real grass struggles, and anyone who would rather spend weekends using the garden than tending it.

What lies under the grass decides how it looks. Turf and topsoil are dug out, a compacted stone base is laid and levelled, and a weed membrane goes down before the grass is rolled out, joined and fixed at the edges. Rain then drains straight through the backing.

Artificial grass can also go over some existing hard surfaces, such as a sound concrete area or a firm deck, using a foam underlay for a softer feel. At the survey you can compare pile heights, colours and textures, and choose the one that suits your garden best.

Laying Your New Lawn

A good artificial lawn depends on careful preparation underneath. An installation normally covers the following stages, all set out in your quote before the work goes ahead.

  • Lifting the old turf and removing it from site
  • Digging out to depth for the new base
  • A compacted, free-draining stone sub-base
  • A weed membrane to keep growth from coming through
  • Rolling out, joining and trimming the grass
  • Securing the edges with timber or fixing pins
  • Brushing the pile up for an even, natural look
  • Foam underlay where grass goes over hard ground
Why Choose Us for Artificial Grass

Your Artificial Grass Fitter

Most problems with artificial lawns, such as dips, puddles and visible seams, come from the base and the joins. The care taken at those stages is where the difference shows.

Choose Your Grass with Help

At the free survey you get advice on pile height, colour and backing, matched to children, pets, shade or simply how the lawn will look from the house.

Drains Like It Should

The stone base is laid to let rain pass straight through, so the lawn is usable soon after a downpour rather than soggy.

Edges Kept Neat

Edges are fixed firmly against borders and walls, so the grass stays flat and tidy without lifting or curling over time.

No Pressure to Book

Your artificial grass quote comes after a free survey and carries no obligation, leaving you free to compare it with others.

Artificial Grass: How It Works

From Turf to Artificial Lawn

Laying artificial grass follows a straightforward sequence, most of it spent on the ground beneath what you will see.

1

Measure & Advise

The free survey measures the lawn area, checks how the ground drains and looks at access, then covers grass types suited to how you use the garden.

2

Quote the Area

You receive a quote for the area, the grass you have chosen and the base preparation needed, with any edging or underlay listed.

3

Base, Then Grass

Old turf is removed, the stone base is laid and compacted, membrane goes down and the grass is laid, joined and fixed at the edges.

4

Brush & Review

The pile is brushed up and the surface left clean. We review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

Artificial Grass FAQs

Artificial Grass Questions

Is Artificial Grass Good for Dogs?

It can be a practical choice for dog owners, since there are no muddy paws or worn patches. Solid waste is picked up as normal, and urine drains through the backing, though rinsing the area with water now and then keeps smells down. A free-draining base matters most here.

Does Artificial Grass Get Hot in Summer?

Synthetic fibres can feel noticeably warmer than real grass in strong, direct sun, particularly on south-facing lawns. A quick spray of water cools the surface, and lighter-coloured or heat-reducing products are available. Shade from trees or a pergola also helps on the hottest afternoons.

Can Artificial Grass Go Over Concrete?

Yes, provided the concrete is sound and water can drain off it. A foam underlay is laid first to soften the feel underfoot and hide minor joins or cracks in the slab. Drainage holes may be needed where water would otherwise pool on a flat surface.

How Do I Keep Artificial Grass Looking Good?

Brushing against the grain every few weeks keeps the fibres upright, and a leaf blower or rake clears fallen leaves before they rot down. Weeds rarely come through the membrane, but seeds can land on top, so pull any that appear. An occasional rinse removes dust and pollen.

What Is Pile Height on Artificial Grass?

Pile height is the length of the fibres, usually measured in millimetres. Shorter piles look neat and suit areas with heavy use, while longer piles feel softer and look more like a freshly grown lawn. Most garden lawns fall somewhere in the middle of the range.

Will Artificial Grass Drain on Clay Soil?

The grass itself drains freely, but on clay the water still needs somewhere to go once it passes through. A deeper stone base, and sometimes an added drain or soakaway, stops water collecting under the lawn. The survey checks your soil before the base depth is decided.
