Driveway Repair

Driveway Repair Options

Most damage to a drive starts small: a few blocks that dip where a car always parks, a crack in tarmac that lets water in, or a kerb that has worked loose. Left alone, water and frost tend to widen the problem, so repairs are usually simpler the sooner they are made.

Block paving is the easiest surface to repair, because the sunken area can be lifted, the bedding corrected and the same blocks relaid. Tarmac can be cut out and patched, and resin areas can be made good, though an exact colour match on an older surface is not always possible.

Around Stevenage and Hertfordshire, sinking often traces back to a thin base or a disturbed service trench under the drive. The survey looks for that cause, so you know whether a local repair is likely to hold or whether the base needs attention.

What Repair Work Covers

Each repair is shaped by the surface and the fault, but most jobs draw on some of the following work to put the damaged area right and stop it recurring.

  • Lifting and relaying sunken or rocking blocks
  • Correcting the bedding layer and the base beneath
  • Cutting out and patching broken tarmac squarely
  • Sealing fine cracks before water gets underneath
  • Resetting loose kerbs and edging on fresh concrete
  • Replacing cracked blocks with the closest match
  • Re-sanding joints and adjusting levels for run-off

Signs of Driveway Damage

Damage to a drive tends to grow once water gets in. These are the signs that suggest it is time to have yours looked at by someone who can fix it.

Dips Where You Park

Blocks have sunk in the tyre tracks or by the entrance, leaving hollows that hold puddles after every spell of rain.

Cracks & Potholes

Tarmac or concrete has split or broken up in places, and the loose pieces are spreading further with each cold snap.

Rocking Blocks

Blocks move underfoot, joints have opened up or the edging has shifted, letting the whole surface creep outwards.

Standing Water

Rain sits on the surface or runs towards the house instead of away from it, which points to a change in the levels.

Driveway Repairs: How It Works

How Driveway Repairs Work

No two repairs are identical, as the material and the cause of the damage vary, yet most jobs follow the same four stages.

1

Finding the Cause

The damaged area is inspected and the surrounding levels checked to find out whether the base, the edging or water is to blame.

2

Agreeing the Fix

You get a written quote describing the repair, the materials and how the patch will tie in with the existing surface.

3

Lifting & Relaying

Damaged blocks or tarmac are removed, the base is corrected and compacted, and the surface is relaid or patched to level.

4

Checking the Result

Joints are sanded and edges sealed where needed. We review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

Driveway Repairs FAQs

Driveway Repair Questions

Why Has My Block Paving Sunk?

Sinking usually comes from a sub-base that was too thin, poorly compacted or laid on soft ground, or from a trench for pipes or cables that has settled. Heavy vehicles parking in one spot make it worse. Lifting the blocks shows the cause, which can then be corrected before relaying.

Can Cracks in Tarmac Be Repaired?

Fine surface cracks can often be sealed, and broken areas can be cut out squarely and patched with new tarmac. Where cracking runs across much of the drive, the base may be failing, and an overlay or full replacement could be the better long-term option.

Will a Repair Match the Rest of My Driveway?

On block paving, reusing the original blocks gives the closest match. With tarmac and resin, a patch is often visible at first because the existing surface has weathered, though the difference usually softens with use. Cleaning the whole drive afterwards can help everything look more even.

Can Loose Edging Be Reset Without Relaying the Drive?

Usually, yes. Loose or leaning kerbs and edging blocks can be lifted, bedded on fresh concrete and set back to line, often with only a narrow strip of the neighbouring surface disturbed. Fixing the edge also stops blocks spreading outwards and opening the joints.

Is It Worth Repairing an Old Driveway?

If most of the surface is sound and the damage is confined to a few places, a repair usually costs far less than replacing the drive. If problems are spread across the whole area or keep returning, the money may be better spent on a new base. The survey gives you an honest comparison.
