Garden Walls

Brickwork in the Garden

Brick gives a garden firm, permanent structure. A low wall can divide a lawn from a seating area, a raised bed brings planting up to a comfortable height, and a pair of pillars gives a front entrance a proper sense of arrival. Each piece also helps the garden feel part of the house.

Matching matters most with brickwork. Homes around Stevenage range from post-war new town brick to older Hertfordshire red stock, so colour, texture and bond are chosen to sit well with your house. Mortar colour and the finish of the joints make a surprising difference too.

Garden brickwork also does practical jobs. Raised beds save bending and give plants better drainage, low walls and edging keep borders and lawns apart, and brick seating walls make room for guests without extra furniture. Copings on top shed rain and protect the bricks below.

Brickwork: How It Works

Building Your Garden Wall

Brick structures in the garden are built in a set order, and most jobs move through these four broad stages.

1

Survey & Match

The free survey measures the area, checks ground conditions and looks at your house and existing walls to guide brick choice, height and bond.

2

Confirm the Details

You agree the brick, coping and joint finish, and receive a quote covering the foundation, the build and removal of any old walling.

3

Foundation & Courses

A trench is dug and a concrete foundation laid, then the brickwork rises course by course, kept level and plumb, with copings fitted on top.

4

Pointing & Review

Joints are finished and the work area cleaned of mortar. We review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

Brickwork FAQs

Garden Brickwork FAQs

Is Permission Needed for a Front Garden Wall?

A wall up to one metre high next to a road, or two metres elsewhere, is usually permitted development in England. Taller walls, those on listed properties and walls in conservation areas may need consent. A front wall can also affect visibility for drivers, so sight lines are worth considering.

What Is a Brick Bond?

A bond is the pattern in which bricks are laid so that the joints overlap and spread the load. Stretcher bond, with each brick offset by half, is the most common in gardens. English and Flemish bonds mix long and short faces and suit thicker walls and period homes.

How High Should a Raised Bed Be?

For most planting a raised bed of around 45 to 60 centimetres works well, deep enough for roots and low enough to reach across comfortably. Taller beds, up to waist height, save bending for anyone with back or knee trouble. Width matters too: you should reach the centre from one side.

Why Do Garden Walls Need a Coping?

A coping is the row of stones or bricks along the top of a wall. It stops rain soaking down into the brickwork, where frost can then crack the bricks and loosen the mortar. Copings that overhang slightly and have a drip edge shed water away from the face below.

Can New Brickwork Match an Old Wall?

Usually it can be matched closely. Reclaimed bricks or modern bricks in a similar colour and texture are compared with the existing wall, and the mortar mix is adjusted to match its tone. New brickwork can look slightly brighter at first, and tends to tone down as it weathers.

What Is the White Powder on New Brickwork?

That chalky white bloom is efflorescence, caused by salts in the bricks or mortar coming to the surface as the wall dries out. It is harmless and usually fades on its own as rain washes it away. Brushing it off when dry helps, but avoid pressure washing, which adds more water.
