Surface Cleaning

Driveway Cleaning for Homes

Moss, algae and black spots build up on drives that sit in shade or stay damp, and oil and tyre marks add to the dull look. A thorough clean lifts that layer from block paving, tarmac, resin and concrete, often revealing a colour you had forgotten was there.

Green growth on a drive is also slippery when wet, which matters on sloping drives around Stevenage and Hertfordshire. Cleaning removes that slick film and the weeds rooted in the joints, making the surface safer for anyone arriving at your front door.

On block paving, cleaning washes out some of the jointing sand. The joints are refilled with kiln-dried sand afterwards, and an optional sealer can then help bind that sand and resist new stains and weed growth.

Driveway Cleaning: What's Included

Driveway Cleaning Includes

A proper deep clean goes beyond blasting the surface with water. Depending on your drive and the options you choose, the work typically covers the following.

  • Clearing loose debris, leaves and surface weeds
  • Treating moss, algae and lichen before washing
  • Rotary or lance cleaning matched to the surface
  • Degreasing oil and fuel marks where they can lift
  • Rinsing dirty water and silt off the drive
  • Re-sanding block paving joints with kiln-dried sand
  • An optional sealer to bind joints and resist stains
When to Book Driveway Cleaning

When to Book a Drive Clean

Most drives give clear clues when a deep clean is due. If you notice any of these on yours, it is worth arranging a visit or sending a few photos.

Green or Black Patches

Moss, algae and lichen spots have spread across the surface, leaving it looking patchy and slippery in wet weather.

Weeds in the Joints

Weeds keep returning between blocks or along the edges, and pulling them by hand never seems to keep up for long.

Oil & Tyre Stains

Dark marks from cars, drips or spilled fuel have soaked into the surface, and an ordinary wash does nothing to shift them.

Faded, Tired Look

The drive has lost its colour and makes the front of the house look neglected, perhaps just as you plan to sell.

Driveway Cleaning: How It Works

How a Driveway Is Cleaned

The exact method depends on your surface, but a deep clean of a drive generally runs through four stages.

1

Look & Assess

The surface type, staining and joint condition are checked, and you agree whether re-sanding or sealing should follow.

2

Pre-Treatment & Washing

Moss and stains are treated, then the surface is cleaned with a rotary cleaner or a pressure lance suited to the material.

3

Re-Sanding & Sealing

On block paving, kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints, and a sealer is applied afterwards if you chose one.

4

Rinse & Review

Debris is rinsed away from the drive and its edges. We review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

Driveway Cleaning FAQs

Driveway Cleaning FAQs

Will Pressure Washing Damage My Block Paving?

It can if the pressure is too high or the lance is held too close, as this strips sand from the joints and can scar the face of the blocks. Using a rotary surface cleaner at a suitable pressure, then re-sanding the joints, keeps the risk low.

Do I Need My Driveway Sealed After Cleaning?

Sealing is optional. On block paving it helps bind the new jointing sand, making it harder for weeds to take hold and for oil to soak in. A sealer will not stop every weed, but it makes later cleaning easier and helps the colour stay even.

Can Oil Stains Be Removed Completely?

Fresh oil stains usually lift well with a degreaser and hot or pressure washing. Old stains that have soaked deep into concrete or porous blocks may fade rather than vanish entirely. The result depends on the surface and how long the oil has been there.

When Is the Best Time to Clean a Driveway?

Spring and early autumn are popular, as moss and weeds are active and the weather is usually mild enough for sealers to cure. Cleaning can be carried out at most times of year, though sealing needs dry conditions and temperatures comfortably above freezing.

Can Resin or Tarmac Drives Be Cleaned Too?

Yes. Resin bound and tarmac surfaces can both be cleaned, but they need a gentler approach than block paving. Lower pressure and suitable cleaning products lift dirt and growth without loosening stones from resin or scuffing the face of tarmac.
