Slab Cleaning Service

Deep Patio Cleaning

Shade, damp and fallen leaves turn even good stone green over a few seasons, and the joints fill with weeds and black spots. Patio cleaning lifts that growth and grime so the slabs show their real colour again, and the surface is far less slippery when it rains.

The method depends on the stone. Porcelain and granite take a firm pressure wash, while softer sandstone and limestone need a gentler approach and a suitable cleaning solution so the face is not scoured. Black spot lichen usually needs a dedicated treatment, as pressure alone rarely shifts it.

Patio cleaning is available across Stevenage, Hitchin, Hatfield, Harpenden and the rest of Hertfordshire. It suits a patio you are happy with that simply looks tired, and it is worth doing before deciding whether any slabs really need relaying.

Patio Cleaning: What's Included

What a Patio Clean Includes

A thorough clean does more than rinse the surface. Depending on the stone and its condition, a typical patio clean includes the following work, agreed with you beforehand.

  • Clearing furniture, pots and loose debris from the area
  • Scraping weeds and moss out of the joints
  • Pressure washing at a setting that suits the stone
  • Treating algae and black spot lichen on the surface
  • Spot treatment for rust, oil and food stains
  • Re-pointing or re-sanding joints left open after washing
  • Optional sealer on stone that suits one
  • Rinsing down nearby walls, steps and edges
When to Book Patio Cleaning

When to Book a Patio Clean

Most people notice the patio before they think about cleaning it. These are the usual signs that a deep clean is worth booking.

Slippery When Wet

Algae builds a green film that turns slick after rain, which makes stepping out of the back door a risk for the whole house.

Weeds in the Joints

Weeds and moss pushing up between slabs loosen the pointing and let more water in, which can start to unsettle the stone.

Black Spots on Stone

Small dark marks that will not shift with a brush are usually lichen, which needs a treatment that works deeper than water.

Selling or Hosting

A clean patio makes a better first impression for house viewings or a summer gathering, without the cost of new stone.

Why Choose Us for Patio Cleaning

Choosing a Patio Cleaner

Cleaning stone is about knowing when to stop as much as how hard to push. Each patio is assessed for its material and condition before any machine is switched on.

Methods Matched to Your Stone

Sandstone, limestone, porcelain and concrete each react differently to pressure and chemicals, so the approach is set for your slabs, not one setting for all.

Patio Cleaning: How It Works

How a Patio Clean Works

Each clean follows the same broad stages, adjusted for the stone and how heavily it is marked.

1

Photos or Visit

Send photos or arrange a visit so the stone, the size of the area and the type of staining can be assessed.

2

Test Patch

A small, hidden area is cleaned first to check the method suits the stone before the whole surface is done.

3

Wash & Treat

The surface and joints are washed, growth and stains are treated, and open joints are refilled once the stone has dried.

4

Final Rinse & Review

Everything is rinsed clear of residue. We review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

Patio Cleaning FAQs

Patio Cleaning FAQs

Will Pressure Washing Damage My Patio?

It can if the pressure is too high for the stone. Softer sandstone and limestone can be etched, and weak pointing can be blasted out of the joints. That is why the setting, the nozzle and the distance are adjusted for each surface, and why a cleaning solution is used on stone that cannot take a hard wash.

How Often Should a Patio Be Cleaned?

There is no fixed rule. A shady patio under trees greens up faster than an open, sunny one, and porous sandstone holds more moisture than porcelain. Many homeowners find a brush and rinse each spring keeps things under control, with a deeper clean only when growth or staining comes back.

Can Black Spots Be Removed From Sandstone?

Black spots on sandstone are usually lichen rooted into the surface of the stone, so pressure washing alone tends to leave them behind. A dedicated treatment is applied and left to work, and the marks fade gradually. Very old or deep spots may lighten a great deal without disappearing completely.

Should I Seal My Patio After Cleaning?

It depends on the stone. Sandstone and some concrete slabs can benefit from a sealer that slows staining and green growth, while porcelain rarely needs one. Some sealers darken the stone or add a slight sheen, so a test area is sensible. Sealers wear over time and need reapplying to keep working.

Will the Joints Need Refilling After a Clean?

Often, yes. Washing can lift loose sand from between block pavers and break out pointing that was already cracked. Open joints are refilled with kiln-dried sand or fresh pointing once the surface is dry, which helps keep weeds out and stops water getting under the slabs.

Can a Cleaned Patio Look New Again?

Cleaning brings back the colour hidden under dirt and growth, and the difference is usually striking. It cannot fix slabs that are cracked, sunken or worn smooth, or stone that has faded in the sun. If those problems show once the patio is clean, relaying or replacing the worst areas is the next step to consider.
