Gravel Driveways for Homes

Gravel is a sensible choice for a home in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, when you want a large area covered for less than a bound or paved surface usually costs. Sharp-edged chippings bind together far better than smooth pebbles, which tend to roll aside under wheels and leave bare patches in the surface.

Asking for a gravel quote in Hatfield or in Welwyn Garden City, St Albans and Potters Bar costs nothing and commits you to nothing, so you can weigh it against a bound surface first.

Gravel Driveways: How It Works

Building a Gravel Driveway

Gravel installation is straightforward when each layer gets proper attention, and the work tends to follow four stages.

1

Survey & Stone Choice

The drive is measured and you choose a stone colour and size, with advice on whether grids would help where cars turn.

2

Base & Membrane

The area is excavated, a crushed-stone base is compacted, and a permeable membrane is laid to keep weeds from coming up.

3

Edging & Gravel

Edging is fixed around the drive, any grids are laid and filled, then the gravel is spread and raked to an even depth.

4

Final Rake & Review

Stray stones are cleared from neighbouring surfaces. We review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

Gravel Driveways FAQs

Gravel Driveways FAQs in Hatfield

Can You Lay a Gravel Drive at My Home in Hatfield?

Yes. A gravel drive can be laid at your home in Hatfield, with the job planned from Hookscross just outside Stevenage. First comes a free site survey to look at the ground and levels, and the written price you receive afterwards places you under no obligation.

Which Towns Near Hatfield Do You Cover for Gravel Drives?

As well as Hatfield, gravel drives are laid in nearby Welwyn Garden City, St Albans and Potters Bar, and the area covered stretches across Hertfordshire and reaches north London as well as parts of Bedfordshire and Essex. If you are unsure whether your address is included, call to check before booking a free site survey of your drive.

What Size Gravel Is Best for a Driveway?

Angular stone of roughly 14 to 20 millimetres is a common choice for drives. It locks together better than rounded pebbles, resists being pushed around by tyres and is less likely to get caught in shoe treads. Smaller pea shingle tends to move about more under cars.

Do Gravel Grids Stop Stones Moving?

Stabilising grids are honeycomb panels laid under the gravel. They hold the stones in cells, which reduces rutting, keeps the depth even and makes the surface easier for wheelchairs, buggies and narrow tyres. They are especially useful on slopes and where cars turn.

Will Gravel Get Carried Into My House?

A few stones can travel on shoes or tyres, mostly where gravel meets a doorstep or the road. Choosing angular stone, keeping the layer shallow and even, and adding a firm strip of blocks or setts at the entrance all help keep stones on the drive.

How Do I Keep a Gravel Driveway Looking Neat?

Rake the surface now and then to level out tyre tracks and redistribute stones that have moved. Clear leaves before they rot down, and top up with matching gravel when the layer thins. Any weeds that root in debris on top of the membrane can be pulled out easily.
