Patterns, Borders & Blocks

If you want a drive in Welwyn Garden City with a pattern, a border or a mix of colours, block paving offers more choice of layout than most other surfaces. A row of kerbs or edge blocks set in concrete frames the drive, holding the paving tight so it cannot spread outwards over time.

Photos sent on WhatsApp from Welwyn Garden City, or from nearby Hatfield, Stapleford and Hertford, are enough for a first view on layout and border options before anyone visits the house.

Block Paving: How It Works

Laying a Block Paved Drive

Block paving goes down in clear layers, and each one depends on the one beneath it. The work generally follows four stages.

1

Measure & Design

Your drive is surveyed and you choose a pattern, colour and border, with ideas offered to suit the house and the space.

2

Dig Out & Base

The old surface is lifted, kerbs are set in concrete and the stone sub-base is compacted to carry vehicles without sinking.

3

Lay & Joint

Sand is screeded, blocks are laid and cut to fit, then jointing sand is brushed in and the surface is vibrated to lock it.

4

Final Look Over

Loose sand is swept away and the area is left tidy. We review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

Block Paving FAQs

Block Paving FAQs in Welwyn Garden City

Do You Lay Block Paved Driveways in Welwyn Garden City?

Yes. Homes in Welwyn Garden City are within the area covered from Hookscross, just outside Stevenage, for block paved drives. Every job opens with a free site survey, followed by design ideas for the pattern and border and a written quote you are under no obligation to accept.

Can I Get Block Pattern Ideas for My Home in Welwyn Garden City?

Yes. Design ideas are free, and they cover the laying pattern, block size, colour and any contrasting border. Photos of the house and drive can be shared ahead of a visit to start the process, and the ideas are refined at the survey once the space has been measured.

What Is Permeable Block Paving?

Permeable blocks are laid with wider joints filled with fine grit instead of sand, over an open-graded stone base. Rain passes through the joints into the base and soaks away, which cuts surface run-off and can help a front driveway meet planning rules without a separate drain.

Why Do Weeds Grow Between Block Paving?

Seeds land in the joints and take root in the sand, especially where the sand has washed out or the drive stays damp. Keeping joints topped up with kiln-dried sand and sweeping regularly reduces the problem, and a sealant can harden the joints further.

Which Laying Pattern Is Strongest for a Driveway?

Herringbone, laid at 45 or 90 degrees, is widely regarded as the best pattern for drives because the blocks interlock in both directions and resist the twisting forces of turning tyres. Other patterns can still work well on a sound base, especially where cars mostly drive straight in.

Should I Choose Concrete or Clay Pavers?

Concrete blocks come in the widest range of colours and sizes and are usually the more affordable choice. Clay pavers tend to hold their colour well over time and suit older properties, though they generally cost more. The survey is a good time to weigh up which suits your home.
